Tournament of Young Chemists

Learn and Create!

This is Ayb’s longest-running team tournament (since 2010). It is a platform that provides the opportunity to rediscover chemistry and science, develop debating and analytical skills, and paves the way to perform in international platforms in the future.

The tournament is unique in its kind for high school students from Armenia and Artsakh. The idea of the initiative and the organizational technologies of the tournament are borrowed from the similar All-Ukrainian Tournament and gives the best participant teams the opportunity to represent Armenia in the international All-Ukrainian Tournament.

The alarming decrease of interest in science subjects is one of the main problems in the field of education in Armenia. This is evidenced by the applicants’ statistics in the related fields at universities. This leads to a shortage of specialists and scientists in a number of areas of strategic importance for the country's development. So, in purpose of responding to these issues, to make the importance and interest of natural sciences and mathematics visible for younger generation and to bridge the gap between school and university, Ayb initiated the Tournament of Young Chemists.

The tournament is for inventors taking their first steps. It aims to promote career orientation and skill development for schoolchildren. The tournament is designed on the principle of an interactive game that makes scientific activities more attractive for youngsters.

Students have the opportunity to:

  • find solutions to current issues that are probably yet unsolved,
  • debate over science topics and present the results of their own research,
  • develop the ability to view problems from multiple perspectives,
  • receive professional guidance from experienced jury members,
  • make new connections with the scientific community and be a part of further programs.

The most interesting and popular component of the tournament is science battles, with a role distribution specific to the tournament format.

The tournament is held in three rounds:

•    Quarter-final – The teams participate in a chemistry quiz, where students have a set period of time to answer the questions of the questionnaire.

•    Semi-final – 6 to 12 teams advanced to the semi-final interchangeably perform as speakers, opponents, reviewers, observers and debate on issues published in advance.
•    Final – Teams that passed the semi-finals by the jury's decision participate in the scientific battle.

The winner of the tournament is determined by the results of the final round.

Apart from teamwork skills, individual qualities are also considered. The jury selects the winners in the categories “Best Speaker,” “Best Opponent,” and “Top Reviewer” of the tournament.

Each team should consist of:

  • 4-5 members,
  • a captain,
  • a coach.

Since its inception in 2010, the amount of participants in the tournament has reached to:

  • 311 teams
  • 1507 students
  • 280 teachers
